Earlston Tennis Club tennis in the heart of the Scottish Borders

Earlston Tennis Club Facility Improvement Project

Earlston Tennis Club's project came about because the facilities available to the club (2 doubles and a singles court which had not been re-surfaced since originally laid in 1980s) became unsuitable for the aspirations of a popular club in the heart of the Borders.

The club wanted to take action to bring it up to standard with other clubs in the Borders and planned to create a modern tennis facility offering:

  • 2 all-weather surface floodlit doubles tennis courts
  • Designated kid's zone
  • Practise wall
  • DDA compliant clubhouse with changing and shower facilities

September 2010 - Project starts

The club decided to put a bid in to the Scottish Borders LEADER funding body for 90% of the estimated £185,000 needed to create a tennis facility fit for the 21st century.

Scottish Borders LEADER is a joint European and Scottish Government funded programme which supports innovative and sustainable local rural development projects.

Discussions were also held with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) which agreed to consider funding the remaining 10% of the funding required.

November 2010 - Funding submissions

Applications were submitted to Scottish Borders LEADER and the LTA for consideration. The club also submitted its planning application for the new facility and agreed a lease for the land from Scottish Borders Council.

December 2010 – January 2011 – Green light

Exciting news for the Club; it was delighted to learn that it was approved planning permission for the new facility and both funding applications were approved! The project had a green light to go ahead.

January 2011 – April 2011 – Procurement

The Club needed to consider its main contractor for the works and was delighted to appoint JWG Miller of Earlston to carry the main construction works. During this time, the Building Warrant was submitted.

May 2011 – July 2012 - Construction!

JWG Miller started work on the construction of the new facility; despite being slowed down by the weather and other construction issues, the club excitedly watched the progress as the club house was built, floodlights erected and the courts laid down.

July 2012 – Anyone for Tennis?

It was very exciting for members of the club and community to step onto the new tennis courts, rackets in hand and ready to play!

Inspired by the recent successful run by Andy Murray to the Wimbledon final adults and juniors alike were soaking up the new tennis opportunities in the heart of Earlston.

September 2012 – Officially Open!

The new facility will be officially opened on 23rd September 2012 by Christine Windmill, President of Tennis Scotland. On a very special (and sunny) day over 50 local adults and juniors took to the courts to try out the new facilities and celebrate the new facilities.
